Youth club wins grant funding

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Jul 28, 2010 - 11:00:24 am PDT

The Boys & Girls Club of the Coastside has won two prestigious grants to help expand programs and perhaps jump-start the long-idle idea to build a permanent youth facility on the Coastside.

Last week, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation awarded $15,000 to help the local nonprofit develop a long-term plan to raise money for a youth facility. Building a youth center was originally proposed in 1996 but never materialized due to a series of land-use and development disputes.

Kaiser Permanente awarded a $9,500 “Healthy Eating Active Living” grant to help the local Boys & Girls Club chapter expand its nutrition and health programs. Club Executive Director Anna McDevitt envisions new cooking classes and other programs designed to help adolescents make better eating choices.
